[GroroPot Season 3 #001] Germinating Nemophila menziesii: My First Step into Blue Blooms
First attempt at germinating blue baby eyes (Nemophila menziesii) with a petri dish + peat pellets method
🌱 Kit: Nemophila menziesii flower seed germination set
🗓️ Start Date: December 24, 2023
🎁 Event: GroroPot Season 3 Winner
🌿 Unboxing the GroroPot Kit
I was lucky to be selected as a winner for the GroroPot Season 3 event. Naturally, I couldn’t wait to unbox and try growing the seeds myself!
When I opened the box, I was touched to see that the team had handwritten my nickname inside. That small gesture reflected genuine care and effort.
Among the various components inside, what stood out to me were:
- The Nemophila menziesii seeds
- The peat pellets for germination
- The LED plant grow light – a special bonus!
🌱 Why I Chose Nemophila (Again)
I previously tried germinating Impatiens with a GroRoPot kit but failed due to inconsistent moisture control.
This time, I decided to challenge myself again with both Nemophila and Impatiens, hoping to learn from my earlier mistakes.
🧪 Germination Method #1: Petri Dish with Tissue
- I placed a thick layer of tissue in a clean petri dish.
- I added water generously until the tissue was well-soaked.
- I sprinkled the Nemophila seeds evenly across the surface.
- I repeated the same process for the Impatiens seeds.
This method gives me a visual check on how the seeds respond to moisture before transferring them to soil.
🟤 Germination Method #2: Peat Pellets
While it’s totally fine to plant seeds directly into peat pellets, I learned from my past experience that improper watering can ruin the process.
So this time, I did both:
✔️ Germinating seeds on tissue
✔️ Planting directly into expanded peat pellets
Steps:
- Soaked the pellets in water until they expanded fully
- Planted one Nemophila seed per pellet
- Covered the setup with plastic wrap or bubble wrap to maintain humidity
- Checked moisture levels daily to prevent drying before germination
📅 Keeping a Growing Journal
The kit also came with a plant growing calendar, which I loved! I wrote down:
- The plant names
- The sowing dates
- Notes about water, light, temperature, and changes
It’s a helpful way to stay consistent and review what worked (or didn’t).
🎥 I also filmed a short clip showing how I sowed the Nemophila seeds! (Will be uploaded soon)
🌸 Final Thoughts
Starting something new always comes with trial and error.
But this seed-starting experience reminded me that even small steps count in gardening.
Whether it’s a sprout or a bloom, every stage is worth celebrating.
I’ll update again when the seeds start to germinate and grow! 🌿
Stay tuned 🌱
