Exploring the Sejong Arboretum Plant Festival: Free Plants, DIY Terrariums, and More (Autumn 2023)
In October 2023, I had the chance to visit the Korean National Sejong Arboretum during its annual Houseplant Culture Festival—and it turned out to be one of the most refreshing green experiences I’ve had all year.
The event was completely free to the public on that day, including admission to the arboretum itself. A perfect autumn Saturday with vibrant plants, hands-on workshops, and even free giveaways.
🌿 Free Indoor Plant Giveaway
I arrived early and queued up for the free indoor plant giveaway. After about 20 minutes of waiting since 10:00 AM, I was able to receive a small green companion as part of the event.
Visitors could choose between topsoil, compost, or a plant, and I picked the plant—an Oxalis triangularis (which I later found out is a tuber-type species). It was a first-come, first-served giveaway and ended once supplies ran out.
🌸 Festival Highlights
The Geranium Club showcased beautiful plant displays grown by members.
Over 20 booths were set up around the Grass Plaza, selling houseplants, pots, and accessories.
The displays were visually stunning, especially the succulent baskets and African species that have become popular.
A surprising variety of carnivorous plants was also available—many of which are hard to find in regular shops.
✨ Free Experiences
There were also hands-on activities open to all visitors:
DIY Terrarium Station: Using Scandiamoss and Ionantha, participants could make their own mini plant worlds.
Natural Air Freshener Making: I joined this workshop and will share more about it in a separate post.
🌳 More to Explore
After the festival area, I explored the arboretum's Four-Season Greenhouse, walked through their outdoor gardens, and caught a glimpse of preparations for a night performance scheduled for that evening.
Although I couldn’t participate in the terrarium workshop due to long lines, the atmosphere alone was worth the visit.
