Tissue Culture Plant Kit from Sejong Botanical Garden

In early 2024, I came across a unique tissue culture plant kit at the Sejong National Botanical Garden’s gardening shop. Inside a sealed glass bottle was a tiny, living plant—a mysterious and beautiful specimen called Alocasia azlanii.

🧪 Fascinated by a Plant in a Flask

The kit featured a companion plant grown via tissue culture, and I was instantly drawn to it. It was like holding a tiny jungle world in your hands. After bringing it home, I followed the provided instructions for transplanting.

I chose a transparent iced coffee cup as a humidity dome. For the first few weeks, the plant adjusted slowly. But to my surprise, it thrived with minimal water and just LED grow lights. Within two and a half months, the leaves grew too large for the cup.

🧪 Repotting and Growth

Once the cup became too cramped, I moved the Alocasia into a larger pot and transferred the flask it came in to a bigger container as well. Its new home now provides more space, ventilation, and access to indirect light.

Even now, I only mist occasionally and avoid overwatering. It seems to enjoy stable humidity and light more than anything else.

🍃 Mysterious Beauty of Alocasia Azlanii

One of the reasons I love this plant is its appearance:

  • The leaves shimmer with a hidden purple hue, especially when viewed from different angles.
  • Its translucent stems give it an ethereal, almost fantasy-like quality.

This experience has given me a new appreciation for tissue culture kits—perfect for plant lovers who enjoy watching growth unfold gradually.
