Growing Sweet Basil at a Greenhouse | The Easiest Herb to Grow

Among all herbs, sweet basil (Ocimum basilicum) stands out as one of the easiest and most rewarding to grow. With its aromatic leaves and fast growth, it's a favorite for both beginners and experienced growers alike.

Starting with 30 Sweet Basil Seedlings at a Greenhouse

While managing various types of herbs, I unexpectedly found myself growing around 30 sweet basil seedlings at a small greenhouse farm. I didn’t sow the seeds myself—someone else started the seeds, and I began from the seedling stage shown in the photo.

+3 Days: Gently Starting

Three days after care began, the seedlings were still small and hesitant to grow—but they looked promising.

+10 Days: Rapid Growth Begins

Just 10 days in, the basil had grown visibly taller and fuller, showing vigorous signs of life under greenhouse conditions.

+20 Days: Time to Prune

At the 20-day mark, it was time to prune. I trimmed the central stem of each basil plant to promote branching and thicker foliage.

+40 Days: Basil Turning Into Small Trees!

At 40 days, some plants had started forming flower spikes, and many had grown so much they resembled miniature trees. Growth was phenomenal—far beyond typical expectations.

Even today, as I return to the greenhouse, the plants continue to grow actively.

How I Cared for Sweet Basil

Here’s the simple routine I followed:

  • Regular deep watering to keep the soil evenly moist
  • Scheduled pest control treatments
  • Periodic pruning to shape and stimulate leaf production

This cycle of watering, treating, and trimming was essential to maintain healthy growth.

My indoor basils...

Sadly, all my indoor basils have gone. For research and observation, 2-3 species at a time seem to be the best.

Final Thoughts

Sweet basil truly lives up to its name—it’s easy to grow, forgiving with care, and incredibly useful. Whether you're managing a greenhouse or looking to grow fresh herbs for your market stand, this herb delivers time and again.
