Growing Red Rubin Basil Indoors (Deep Purple Basil under LED Lights)

Red Rubin Basil is a striking purple-leaf cultivar of sweet basil. The foliage ranges from deep burgundy to plum and looks incredible on a windowsill or under a grow light. I grew it primarily for its color and form; the flavor is similar to sweet basil but with a slightly spicier edge. 2) From Cotyledons to True Leaves: Color Showing Early

Germination is straightforward: the cotyledons appear first, then true leaves start to unfurl with a visible purple tint. By the time you have four true leaves, the color deepens—especially if the plant is getting consistent light. Early growth is compact, and the leaf texture turns slightly crinkled as it matures.

3) Transplant to a Clear Pot: Roots, Drainage, and Growth Boost

I moved seedlings to a clear square pot so I could watch root development and avoid overwatering. Use a well-draining mix (all-purpose potting soil + perlite/pumice). The clear pot helps time watering—once you see fewer condensation lines and the media lightens in color, it’s time to water. Good drainage keeps roots oxygenated and promotes steady top growth.

4) LED Grow Lights Indoors: Keeping That Deep Purple Color

Red Rubin holds its richest color with bright, consistent light. A full-spectrum LED grow bulb kept my plants compact and intensely pigmented. Place the light about 25–35 cm (10–14 in) above the canopy for 12–14 hours daily. If the plant stretches or turns dull green, increase intensity or reduce distance slightly.

5) Pruning and First Blooms: Cut for Leaves or Let It Flower

Once the plant reaches 15–20 cm, pinch the top to encourage branching and a bushier shape. When flower spikes appear, choose your goal:
