식물을 키우고, 고개분들에게 알려드리면서 느끼고 있는 것 중에 하나가, 실제 시장에서 유통되고있는 많은 식물들이 잎이 화려한 수입식물이라는 것이다.
우리가 흔히 알고 있는 몬스테라, 고무나무, 스투키, 스킨답서스 등 대부분은 열대지방을 원산지로 하고 있으며, 월동이 되지 않는 단점이 있지만, 실내에서 4계절 내내 푸르른 잎을 볼 수 있다는 장점이 있다.
물론 기후의 한계로 원산지만큼 성장하여 열매를 맺을 수 없으나, 그렇게되면 실내에서 키우기 어려우므로 적당하게 잘 진화하여 잘 크고 있는 것이다.
특히 몬스테라의 경우, 코로나 19이후, 식테크(식물제테크)시장에 붐과 함께 시장율을 가장 빠르게 선점한 케이스로, 사람들의 힐링니즈와 경제과 융합된 대표적인 유형이다.
다만, 아쉬운 것은 본인 조차도 국내 식물에 대해 제대로 알지 못하고 있다는 사실이다. 길가에 알아서 피고지고 하는 야생화에 관심보다 잎이 크고 화려하고, 사시사철 녹색에 눈이 끌리는 것은 인간 본질이 그렇게 끌리는 것인지 아니면 형성된 시장에 녹아든 것인지는 모르겠다.
여기까지가 식물에 대한 개인적 의견이었고, 업데이트 되는 내용으로 찾아 오려고 한다.
식물은 다양한 지역에서 다양한 종으로 진화하여 각각의 기후에 맞게 성장하고 번식하고있다.
그 중에는 인류의 역사보다 오래되어 지구의 역사를 읽어야 하는 식물도 있다. 식물은 번식을 위한 생존이었겠지만, 인류에게는 생태계를 이해하고 습득할 수 있는 하나의 지침이 될 수도 있고, 가치가 있을 수 있는 것들이 많다.
그 중, 한국의 국가유산청에서 천연기념물로 지정된 식물이 갖고 있는 의미가 무엇일까? 이 친구들을 우리도 집에서 키울 수 있을까? 오히려 국내에 서식하는 식물들이니 키우는데 더 수월하지 않을까, 역사와 함께하는 식물의 후계목을 키운다는 것이 어떤 의미가 될까 생각해본다.

One thing I’ve noticed while growing plants and sharing information about them is that many of the plants distributed in the market are exotic imports with colorful foliage.
Plants we commonly know, such as Monstera, Rubber Tree, Snake Plant, and Pothos, mostly originate from tropical regions. While they have the downside of not surviving the winter, they offer the advantage of maintaining lush green leaves indoors throughout the year.
Of course, due to climatic limitations, they cannot grow as large or produce fruit as they would in their native habitat. However, they have evolved to thrive indoors in a more manageable form, which makes them suitable for indoor cultivation.
Monstera, in particular, has rapidly captured market share following the COVID-19 pandemic, becoming a representative example of the convergence between people’s healing needs and economic trends in the plant tech (plant technology) market.
However, it’s a bit disappointing that I, myself, am not well-versed in domestic plants. While I am drawn to plants with large, colorful leaves that stay green all year round, it raises the question of whether this attraction is a fundamental human inclination or a result of market influence.
This concludes my personal opinion on plants. I plan to explore and update more on the topic.
Plants have evolved in various regions and species, adapting to different climates to grow and reproduce. Some plants are even older than human history and offer insights into Earth’s history. While their reproduction may have been about survival, for humanity, they can serve as guidelines to understand and appreciate ecosystems and hold significant value.
Among these, what is the significance of plants designated as Natural Monuments by the Cultural Heritage Administration of Korea? Could we grow these plants at home? Since they are native to Korea, it might be easier to cultivate them, and growing plants with historical significance could have profound meanings.
