🍓 Strawberry Makgeolli in Korea: A Sweet Twist on Traditional Rice Wine
DIY Korean Fruit Makgeolli Experience in Cheongju
If you've ever imagined mixing sweet strawberries with Korean traditional alcohol—
yes, that exists, and it's absolutely real.
I visited a rural makgeolli-making farm in Cheongju, South Korea,
where we made our very own Strawberry Makgeolli (딸기 막걸리).
You may have heard of Makgeolli, the milky-white Korean rice wine.
But have you ever tried making it with fresh spring strawberries?

🍶 What Is Strawberry Makgeolli?
Strawberry makgeolli is a seasonal version of Korea’s beloved traditional drink.
It’s made with rice, water, nuruk (a fermentation starter), and of course—strawberries.
Some places even add basil or herbs, turning it into a trendy dessert-like drink with a gentle buzz.
During our experience, we followed a simple recipe using pre-measured ingredients and watched a live demonstration by the farm owner.
Although I’m not much of a cook, the process was surprisingly approachable!
🍓 The Experience at a Glance
- 🧺 All ingredients were provided: steamed rice, clean strawberries, and fermentation kits
- 🧑🏫 Hands-on guidance with detailed instructions and traditional tools
- 🧪 After mixing, the makgeolli needs to ferment for a few days—so we took it home for later
- 🍶 Optional tasting of pre-fermented seasonal makgeolli
I couldn’t taste the final result right away,
but I was told it would turn into a naturally sweet and slightly tangy rice wine—
perfect for light spring evenings.
📌 Why You Should Try It
Korean fruit-based makgeolli is gaining popularity, especially among younger generations and tourists.
It’s part traditional craft, part culinary adventure, and part cultural memory.
